Of course were all excited by huge talent and so the temptation is always to recruit talent. Because if I can deconstruct the persons excuse-ridden personal narrative, I can help them get to their potential. You know, shes a great athlete and shell kick everyones ass on the field, but outside the field shes a royal pain in the ass. And even if its delusional I still wont touch it. But basically we all live on a leadership continuum, from people that cant lead worth a lick, people that are extraordinary leaders, and all weve done is weve moved them down the continuum a little bit, but not much. Theyre still going to hate you for the rest of their lives. So assuming that you might say that a leader is made, given all the trial and error that you yourself have had, what advice might you have to someone trying to build their own strong culture and their own organization? And heres what Im learning from it. I read every business book that, you know, makes the New York Times top 10 bestseller list. Right now were in the heart of the womens World Cup, and this inspired me to learn from elite athletes and coaches to unpack their tips and tricks for building winning cultures. Its similar to, you know, me telling that player that, you know, if I say you lead by example what Im saying is youre not a leader. So these kids Im coaching right now come from a culture where their parents think theyre Gods gift or whatever. For example, the first core value is we dont whine. And so I want to sort of leave that with all of you, but I am not an authority on this, please, I am just a womens soccer coach at the university of North Carolina. She was so frustrated with her professional coach. In other words, Id love to be able to read the narrative that that person is using. Im looking forward to it myself. We are some of the best students in Russian literature and poetry in the world, and we are not going to memorize poetry for you. A part of being able to lead anyone, especially now is to win their trust. Theyll know if their preparation isnt good enough coming into the session. Its not gonna work. If I have a 30 player roster at the end of every night, I have three analytics boys that are getting degrees in statistics here, convert that days practice into data and theyre ranked, theyre ranked from one to 30. And for me, because talent is so attractive and because you look at talent and you think I have taken that talent to a world championship or an Olympic gold medal, I have to sign that kid, and all of a sudden they come in and theyre toxic, and then yeah, youre playing them, but, you know, you dont know if playing them is helping you or hurting you because everyone hates them, everyone hates playing with them even though they are good players. The second most important thing is the competitive cauldron, and the final thing is my other function is to take everyones personal narrative to the truth. Not me. Because obviously if I want to be protected from the chaos of the universe and Im a player in this environment, who are the people that are going to completely agree with anything you tell them on tell them on the problem? And as far as Im concerned, if her average is over a 3.0, in other words she lives these core values most of the time, we completely embrace her, because thats what we want everyone to live. Anson: Absolutely. Everything you read in his book is absolutely true. They include responsiveness, reliability, and a non-partisan and non-advocacy approach to our work. Youre a businessman. So now what I do, if theyre below that black line, I meet with them, I talk about how wonderful it would be for them to transfer to Stanford and destroy their program. Melissa: So lets talk a little bit about these 28 factors that you identify and grade on or rate on every day. So if you were to read "In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America's Best Run Companies" (by Tom Peters et. Melissa: I did look at your core values before this, and I was impressed, and I also thought they were extremely comprehensive. And so there are two advantages to me, competing in a training environment. I want them to win gold medals in the Olympics. That wasnt good. And its often a sore subject, too. I want my kids to develop principle-centered living. And now they are doing these frigging sprints. And now these students are looking at each other and they cant believe it. One of the toughest things with women is to get them to lead verbally, because what every woman in the room understands, as soon as a woman leader opens her mouth everyones going to think shes a bitch. Because I have tried to completely change someone and I havent. They dont want to be accountable. And this is one of the worlds great universities. And then all of a sudden five minutes before the practice session begins a manager of the team comes up and hands us a practice outline of whats going to happen. But if we started having all of these, you know, kids take the, you know, Angela Duckworth grit test or, you know, some sort of, you know, psychological profile or take my core value test, wed lose them, and the word would get out that, you know, thats how were evaluating them, and it would kill us. They have to get a sense of their relationship with you that you appreciate the fact they are different. Anson: And obviously, so now Iobviously I dont talk about having them destroy a program. And my last question, and this is a fun question that we actually ask all of our new hires when they start at Eagle Hill, is if you could have 1 superpower, what would it be and why? And of course my whole evolution has been trial and error. When you fire these people, they are going to hate you for the rest of their lives, but they dont want to work for you. But youre actually giving them a very positive opportunity when you fire them. And I was thinking you know what, thats what Ive got to do. The first slide he showed was all I needed, and here was the first slide. Anson: We have to do it, yeah, cause, you know, it destroys everything, you know, teams, companies. The most important thing is what I just addressed. Emulating the core values of the Carolina Womens Soccer Team is a noble goal, indeed, and I strongly advocate them! Now, the way we raise our kids, as we spend every single day ass-kissing all of them, they have no sense of authority because they know their parents are full of crap. And what we do with a cauldron is were trying to figure out a way within the context of our practice to get everyone to compete like theres no tomorrow.
